Puerto Vallarta
Jalisco State is an exporter of culture and importer of tourists. Tequila, Mariachi and sombreros, are all synonymous with Mexico. It makes sense that Jalisco would have a slice of the beach too. There are many great resort towns and tourism regions in Mexico, but this classic Mexican beach paradise is one of the great destinations in the country. If you’re looking for somewhere to sip margaritas on a white sand beach surrounded by palm trees, Puerto Vallarta is a good place to start.
Puerto Vallarta has a busy international airport, an active cruise ship terminal as well as many Canadians and Americans who make their winter residence south of the border. It’s one of the classic beach resort regions of Mexico. There are also many locals who visit here, making the drive from Guadalajara or flying in from Mexico City. There is a lot going on and plenty of things to keep you active in the sun.
Paradise on Mexico’s Pacific coast
Puerto Vallarta has a little bit of everything. You can find many great attractions outside of town too. It’s possible to go surfing, fishing and scuba diving in the Bay of Banderas (probably in the same day if you’re adventurous!). The coast has many all inclusive hotels and small beach towns to cater to all types of travelers.
We only had a short day in town, which we spent wandering around the old town and Plaza de Armas. We had spent a few days to the north, while visiting friends along the Riviera Nayarit. There were plenty of people about, enjoying live music in the square. We snapped a few pictures and then went for a sunset stroll along the malecon, where there are many incredible sculptures and public art pieces. As the sun dipped below the horizon, we found a place for craft beer and oysters.
Puerto Vallarta was also the first place that Rob visited in Mexico! This was way back in 2006, 10 years before the two of us met on the Caribbean coast. We may have snuck a few shots from the way back machine throughout the post, from Las Caletas and Mismaloya beach.
We can’t wait to travel again! This was our last pleasure trip, and since we returned from Puerto Vallarta in early March, a lot has changed. We hope that someday in the future we can get back on the road again.
