Wynwood Walls – Miami Street Art

While we’re on the subject of Street Art, we’ve decided to go on a short adventure across the Gulf of Mexico, with a visit to the cultural capital of Florida; Miami. It is a busy major city, and there are some amazing attractions, from Miami Beach to Little Havana. The city has a very distinct Latin influence, with many Cuban ex-pats who have claimed this city as their new home. The Wynnwood neighborhood is where you should go if you want to explore some of the city’s best street art and murals.

The epicenter of the artwork in Miami is centered around Wynnwood, a former industrial district that had fallen into disrepair. Since the arrival of the first artists, this has become one of the most colourful areas in the city! It has been transformed into a modern trendy area – with many great bars and restaurants – and the former empty lots are primed for future development. Street Art is temporary, so make sure to visit these murals while you can! Some of these were featured in our previous post on Miami, but we still have so much more to share!

This has to be considered one of the best concentrations of Street Art that we’ve ever seen, and many of the best murals bring so much colour to the area. A sort of outdoor museum has been created at Wynnwood Walls & Doors, where there is an indoor/outdoor gallery and museum focusing on Street Art. The project was born in 2009, when the late Tony Goldman came up with an idea to revitalize the area;

“Wynwood’s large stock of warehouse buildings, all with no windows, would be my giant canvases to bring to them the greatest street art ever seen in one place.”

Tony Goldman

It obviously worked. Many artists from around the world have left their mark on Miami, and it’s easy to visit this area while on a self guided walking tour. There are some great coffee shops, bars and restaurants to visit, but the artwork painted onto the walls are why you should be here. It was definately the top highlight during our visit to Miami.

Make sure to located Wynnwood Brewing Company and the incredible Star Wars Mural across the street; after walking around looking at all the artwork, you’re going to be thirsty.
