Snorkeling at Sky Reef

One of our top priorities upon arriving on Cozumel was to find a spot for some great snorkeling. Cozumel is known for its underwater attractions, with some of the best reefs in the world, and is a popular place for snorkeling and scuba diving. The protected reef here is part of the Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, which itself makes up the world’s second longest reef in the world, which stretches along the coast of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras. Let’s just say we were excited to get into the water.

We wanted to find something close by, and after asking the advice of some of the locals, we recommended a small beach club along the west side of the island called Sky Reef. It was amazing! Some of the best corals were located close to the shore, and a good selection of vibrant colours and different fish. We spent a half hour underwater and got some amazing footage (spoiler alert: we got to see an octopus!). This place was top notch.

The way to access this beach is through the beach club – Sky Reef – which is located on the old highway, a very neat looking building with a good restaurant with a patio, offering amazing views of the crystal blue waters. It doesn’t look like much – the shoreline was rocky, and the waves crashed up against the rocks a little bit. Once you get underwater, you see why this is a real attraction. They had a really great patio that you could sit on, and we got a table right next to the water.

The water on Cozumel is very clear, which allows amazing visibility even when the water gets deeper. This place is perfect for amateurs or those who aren’t the best swimmers, because some of the best visuals are right on the shores – almost directly next to where you walk down the stairs into the water. Of course, for us seeing an octopus in the water was a real highlight for us! This was the first place we went into the water on Cozumel and really enjoyed it. The Beach Club was nice and we enjoyed the food, and would definitely go back.

This is our first underwater video, featuring Sky Reef on Cozumel. This place was highly recommended by friends, and it’s easy to see why! Some of the best snorkeling is right next to the shore, so you don’t have to go very far to see some amazing things. While exploring the area, we also got to see our first octopus! Que Chido!
