Swimming with the Turtles at Akumal

We said goodbye to the Riviera Maya in 2020. After calling the Caribbean home for a few years, we have decided to transport ourselves elsewhere for a little while. We will be back. We did a lot of incredible things during our time living here and spent a lot of time under water. One of the last things that we did before our departure was to take a trip to Akumal, to go swimming with the turtles. This was a big bucket list item that we simply had to do before leaving. As you will see in the following video, this was one of the best things we got to do, and something we should have done much sooner. Sometimes you have to save the best for last.

Akumal Bay is located roughly between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, on the main north-south highway that travels from Belize to Cancun. It is a really easy place to visit, especially on a day trip, and the reward is worth the effort. Snorkeling has become one of our favourite past-times that we developed during our time on the Riviera Maya, and the underwater adventures are world class on the Riviera Maya. At Akumal, the main attraction is swimming with turtles, but our guide took us further out towards the reef as well. This is simply one of the “can’t miss” things to do in Mexico.

A few months back, we shared our photography from Yal Kul and the Turtles at Akumal, which featured some of our favourite pictures. Today, we have finally found the time to put together a video from this day of adventure. We hope you enjoy.

Swimming with the Turtles at Akumal

Swimming with the turtles at Akumal is one of the most popular things to do for tourists to the Riviera Maya. Located between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, this is an easy day trip from any of the major resorts or anywhere near the Cancun Hotel Zone. This really is a can’t miss attraction for snorkeling enthusiasts.

For us, this was one of the final things we did before leaving the Riviera Maya. It turned out we should have visited much sooner. This was one of the best things we did during our visit to the Riviera Maya. Sometimes it is best to save the best for last. We were not disappointed as this was one of the most unforgettable experiences. We were glad to finally knock this off the bucket list.
