Charco Del Ingenio Botanical Gardens is located about 20 minutes outside of the historic center of San Miguel de Allende. This is a beautiful natural garden, with an incredible collection of different species of flowers and cactus. It quickly became our favourite destination in the city. It was the perfect way to spend an afternoon outdoors enjoying nature. Today, we’re excited to share some of our best pictures from this amazing attraction.
We found a lot of peace while walking through this outdoor park. This nature reserve is home to many different species of cactus, some of which were much taller than we were. There was many other types other flora and fauna indigenous to Mexico, including Monarch butterflies on their migration from Canada. During our trip through Central Mexico, we had read many great reviews of this nature preserve, so we decided to take our chances and visit. We weren’t sure what to expect when we hopped into our Uber and made our way up the hill towards the gardens, but we are glad we did!
There are many pathways that wind through this 88-hectare reserve, and many of these lead to an incredible view point of the center of San Miguel further down the valley. It took us about two hours to slowly wander around this incredible garden. We found a large man-man lake here held back by a dam and the deep canyon that leads towards San Miguel. There was even an old colonial-era aqueduct, which was a reminder of the importance of this water source the nearby city. This one one of the top highlights of our two week trip!
It is a privately funded botanical gardens, dedicated to the preservation of different species of plants from across Mexico. It was quite the sight, and we got many incredible pictures of different flora and fauna. There were many flowers in bloom; but we missed a golden opportunity to share this earlier this week, on Valentine’s Day.
We certainly enjoyed our time and would recommend this to anyone visiting the city. It was the perfect place to spend an afternoon in San Miguel de Allende.
